AI Slop Index Methodology
How we calculate the monthly AI Slop Index, our flagship composite metric.
AI Slop Index: Methodology
The AI Slop Index is a monthly number that tracks how saturated digital advertising inventory is with AI-generated junk. Think of it like the Fear & Greed Index or CPI — a single figure that tells you which direction things are moving.
Formula
The AI Slop Index is calculated as:
ASI = (S × 0.30) + (V × 0.25) + (Q × 0.20) + (D × 0.15) + (E × 0.10)
Where:
- S = Platform Saturation Score (0-100)
- V = Growth Velocity Score (0-100)
- Q = Quality Degradation Score (0-100)
- D = Detection Difficulty Score (0-100)
- E = Economic Incentive Strength Score (0-100)
Platform Saturation Score (S)
Measures the estimated percentage of AI-generated content across major platforms, normalized to a 0-100 scale.
Inputs:
- Stratified content samples from 9 major platforms
- AI detection scoring applied to each sample
- Platform-weighted aggregation based on total content volume
Update cadence: Monthly sampling windows of 7-10 days
Growth Velocity Score (V)
Measures the rate of change in AI content saturation month-over-month.
Inputs:
- Month-over-month change in platform saturation estimates
- New AI content source creation rates
- Content production volume acceleration metrics
Quality Degradation Score (Q)
Measures the impact of AI content on overall content quality metrics.
Inputs:
- Average engagement depth metrics (time-on-page, completion rates)
- Content originality scoring trends
- User satisfaction proxy signals
Detection Difficulty Score (D)
Measures how hard it is becoming to identify AI-generated content.
Inputs:
- False negative rates of current detection methods
- Benchmark testing against latest AI generation models
- Time-to-detection for new AI content types
Economic Incentive Strength Score (E)
Measures the economic favorability of AI content production.
Inputs:
- Cost-per-content-piece trends
- Revenue-per-impression on AI content
- Profitability estimates for AI content operations
Geographic and Industry Breakdowns
The index is also calculated for:
Geographic regions: North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle East & Africa
Industries: Media & Entertainment, E-Commerce, Health & Wellness, Finance, Education, Travel, Technology
Platforms: Individual platform-level indices for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, Amazon, Google Search
Update Cadence
- Monthly: Full index update on the 1st of each month
- Weekly: Preliminary trend indicators (directional only)
- Quarterly: Deep-dive methodology review and calibration
Historical Baseline
The AI Slop Index baseline will be established with the first monthly report. All subsequent readings will be scaled relative to this baseline.
Media Relevance
The AI Slop Index is designed to be:
- Quotable: A single number that communicates the state of AI slop saturation
- Comparable: Monthly readings enable trend analysis
- Actionable: Platform, geographic, and industry breakdowns inform specific decisions
- Transparent: Full methodology published and updated quarterly
